You should find that owning a small dog, similar to owning a larger breed. Having said that, there are certain points they need to be made aware of when looking after a small dog. Just think about some of the everyday events that may need to be looked at when considering certain needs.

Dinner time

Some of the standard size food you may provide a larger dog ma not be suitable to a smaller breed. Make sure that your dog gets a kibble which suits his tiny mouth and you could get these along with the premium brand of dog foods. Canned soft foods are also perfectly suitable for tiny canines.

Having a place for them to exercise:

Every dog needs the following: regular exercise, an outdoor place for his potty needs, and an enclosed area which provides the animal with security. Smaller dogs are much more nimble that larger dogs and what might be a secure environment for one is not necessarily for the other. It is also important to remember that fences can not provide top protection where you might find hawks eyeing your tiny pet as they are known to come down fast and sweep away minute dogs and puppies. Hence, get your pet a kennel which is covered on the top for the right protection.

Differences in training different size dogs:

Dog professionals tend to agree that tiny dogs are no more trouble to train than their larger cousins however, owners have a history of treating them in a way that spoils them and makes it more difficult. Small dogs don’t think any differently to their larger cousins and believe they are part of the pack where you are their leader but if you show signs of weakness they will start ruling you. One of the most important aspects of training is that the dog must imperatively be house trained even if the mess seems insignificant. Most dog professionals agree that pet dogs should be made to work as this makes it easier to train them and keep them obedient. Before you reward him with a treat or with his meal for having obeyed your commands, make his sit or run or do small tricks.

Finding a new small dog collar:

When shopping for new small dog collars you want to make sure you are getting a dog collar that matches you and your dogs personality. The local pet store has some small dog collars but to get a wide selection you should browse some of the online stores. When fitting your dog with a small dog collar you will want to make certain it is not too lose or too tight. If you can fit your pinkie finger between the collar and the dogs neck you should be ok.

Your dogs appearance:

Small dog care includes some special grooming needs you’ll need to keep in mind. Firstly, as they do not get the same type of outdoor exercise that a larger dog does whereby their nails are trimmed automatically, tiny dogs require their nails trimmed on a more regular small canines do not get the same sort of regular outdoor exercise on rough surfaces that controls their nail growth like a larger dog so they will need to be trimmed more often. Brushing his teeth twice a week is mandatory, especially if he is on soft canned foods. As is evident from the above, caring for a small dog is very much the same for any dog of any size. These may seem like inconsequential points but they can and will make a big difference to your pets health and happiness.

I bet you can imagine the feeling of touching the soft furs of a puppy, its wet licking habits that could annoy you sometimes and the feel of that warm cuddle. Your heart is not the only part of you that having a pup could totally melt away since you are more likely to end up using all the dollars in your pocket with all the costs needed, all the same, no matter how hard a person would say that he don’t need one, landing up with a dog is the more usual event just before he could back out. Apparently, you just can’t resist the feeling of having a furry pet in your home and more often than not, caring for it seems to be more demanding than caring for an infant. It’s an opportunity to train the dog from an early age to fit your surroundings and life style.

Dress up your dog with a jeweled dog collar. They don’t have to be expensive. You can find a cheap but good looking new jeweled dog collar just about anywhere. For the best prices on jeweled dog collars try searching online at different stores or at comparison sites.

If you have children, you can show them how to be gentle in caring for the pup. They will have wonderful memories of growing up with the pup. Beyond these lovely images are the other realities of bringing home a pup – like for an instance, there is always the need for you to undergo your dog to certain schoolings such as walking with him on a lead, the toilet schooling, the Schooling that could make him stop chewing your best shoes but alternatively his chewing toys and all the other stuffs that a pup typically does which can sometimes lead you to the verge of a nervous breakdown. Yes, a pup is precious, but also very needy. Compared to taking care of an older dog, during the first few months of taking care a puppy would usually demand more of your time. More often than not, the dog pounds would tend to crowd its place with a lot of dogs – and many of which are starting to depart the stage of being a pup.

Due to the stock or the dog’s history, there would be no difficulty knowing which dog is best for a household with children or merely those dogs which are better off with adults since the seller or adoption facility will surely recommend you with what you need according to the information about the dog. You can also immediately determine the size of the dog when it reaches its fullness so that you won’t find it hard accommodating the pet into your place. You can see the dog and take him for a walk before making up your mind. There are a lot of pups that can only be a waste, so, if you don’t want to end up with a trash, be sure to assess the dog first through its parents. You want to know what your pup will grow up to be like when it’s older.

A puppy is going to adjust to your household better than an older dog, but that doesn’t mean the older dog won’t love your home, too. A puppy’s needs are simply different to that of the needs of an older dog. Schooling a puppy should start from the fundamentals. a mature dog might already be schooled, but could have more vet bills if it’s not a totally healthy more mature dog. Or, the once fond of kids pup had turned into a grumpy old dog.

Getting a new dog simply depends upon your many considered motives – giving an older shelter dog the home and loving family that it needs is something that you might like to do than spending much of your time and money bringing home a purebred puppy. But if showing or breeding is your goal, a pup with papers might suit your needs more. A puppy with complete documentation can surely cater to your desires if you want to show it off or breed in the future. If you plan to show off your dog or have it breed in the long run, then getting a pup with all the applicable records can surely go with whatever you want or require.

The benefits we can reap from having a pet can be thoroughly rewarding. Due to their unconditional love, friendship and loyalty dogs are rightly known as ‘Man’s best friend’. Dog lovers can return the favour by taking good care of their pet.

It might sound like a lot of work at first but caring for your dog, after the puppy days, is relatively easy and most of the chores can fit neatly into your daily routine.

This article talks about some of the essentials you need to know about dog care.

Collar and ID Tag

The first thing you want to do for a new dog is give it a proper dog collar and an ID tag with your name, address and contact information. This greatly increases the chances of having your dog returned to you if they get separated from you.

Laws

Check with your local animal shelter, veterinarian or humane society to find out what vaccinations your dog needs and be aware of dog fouling laws!

Spay or Neuter

If you are not planning on breeding dogs, help reduce the number of unwanted and stray dogs and improve the health of your pet by having them spay or neutered.

Training

Whether you purchase a book on dog training and teach them the basics at home or enrol in a class, having your dog learn basic commands will have a positive benefit on their behaviour and safety.

Register with a Vet

Regular visits to the vet will ensure your dog’s health and avoid future issues. If you need help locating a good veterinarian, check with a local shelter, breeder or get a recommendation from a fellow dog owner.

Your Dog at Home

Give your dog a proper place to live. Dogs love to go out for a run, but they need extended time out of the elements. Guard your dog from exposure to extreme weather. A big yard with a dog house is wonderful, but spending time with your dog inside and having a comfortable place to sleep, like a dog bed, is essential.

Dog Diets

Feed your dog a nutritionally balanced diet and make fresh water available to it at all times. Consult your vet for information on the type of dog food and amount to feed them in proportion to their size and age.

Dog Leads

A good, strong lead is a must-have item. There is a simple rule to follow; if the dog is off your property, the lead is on. Always make sure your dog is under your control both in and out of the home.

Exercising your Dog

Dogs of all sizes and breeds have one thing in common. They love running around and playing. A fit dog is a happy dog, so spend time together taking walks and with dog toys such as balls and games specially developed to keep them mentally alert and . Taking frequent daily exercise is good for both of you and helps build the bond between you and your dog.

Groom your Dog

A clean dog is a well cared for. Sure dogs like to play outdoors and run around, and there are few things better for their health, and your relationship, than to give their coats a regular dog shampoo bath, trim hair if necessary and groom them with brushes and combs. Dog clothes like coats, hats and boots are also increasingly popular, and can help shield your dog from extreme weather.

Dogs like Companionship

Any relationship is a two-way street. If you are loyal, patient and faithful to your dog, you will have yourself a companion that brings love and joy into your life.

These are just the basics of dog care and picking up a book about dogs is highly recommended. Choose a book that discusses various breeds, traits and care.

Dogs love to dig. Whether it is to bury a bone, look for a bone, or to just see what is underneath the dirt this time, dogs enjoy digging.

Digging can not only ruin your yard, but it can ruin your relationship with your pet. Can you stop this behavior before it gets out of control?

As with children, dogs do things for a reason. Why is your dog digging? If you can figure this out, you are halfway to a solution. Does he just love to fling dirt?

There are reasons why your dog may dig in your yard: he may need more exercise and stimulation. He may be hoarding food or trying to cool off or stay warm in the ground. He may be trying to investigate the smell of fertilizer or fresh dirt.

Knowing the reason behind the digging can help you stop the behavior. For instance, if it is due to boredom or lack of attention, you can start to offer your dog more play time with you. Dog training collars can go a long way in discouraging the behaviour.

If the problem persists, try one of the following:

1. Find the spots your dog usually digs and bury a balloon that has been inflated. If your dog digs, he’ll pop the balloon. This unpleasant reaction to his digging can deter him from continuing.

2. When you refill the holes, add in some of your dog’s own feces. The next time he digs there, he will be repelled by it. This may not be a fun way for you to teach your dog, but it is effective and humane.

3. Unpleasant sensations can also help keep your dog from digging. Bury some chicken wire just below the surface of the ground. When his claws scratch the wire, he’ll often hate the feeling so much he’ll stop.

4. Spray him with a hose. Dogs hate being sprayed, especially in the face. Make sure if you do this that you have caught him in the act of digging or he won’t know why you’re spraying him.

Digging is natural, but it doesn’t have to ruin your yard. Figure out why your dog is engaging in this behavior and take a little time to work on it with him. You’ll both be much happier. Not unlike puppy training, naughty habits can be corrected with a little coaching.

Clicker Training – A Great Training Technique

You want to teach your dog acceptable behavior in a gentle, humane way. Many people have found success with the clicker method.

Clicker training works on the principle of operant conditioning. This is when a behavior is repeated because a reward is associated with it. Here is some more on how clicker training works:

You will need a clicker. This is simply a handheld plastic box. A metal strip is attached. Depressing the strip causes a sharp click.

When you first start click training, you pair the click with a reward, such as a dog biscuit. When the dog performs a command well, you click immediately and offer the treat.

The dog learns to associate the click with the behavior and the click with the treat, which makes it more likely that he’ll repeat it. Soon, just the click will be enough, and eventually, it can be phased out altogether.

Clicking is immediate. Dogs need to know exactly what they are being praised for, and the clicking sound helps let them know. This is why the clicker method is so effective for training.

Your dog really wants to make you proud. Using the clicker method is a great way to teach your dog in an effective and humane manner.

Take your pet’s coaching to the next level with dog obedience training.

Why Get Cheap Dog Training Collars?

Should you invest in supplies to train your dog?

It is important to know you will devote a lot of time and need to spend some money to successfully train your dog.

It is perfectly okay to buy very expensive dog collars if you prefer doing so. However, you will find there are a great deal of choices for you to choose from that do not cost as much. Collars range anywhere from fancy fashion dog collars, studded collars to a wide variety of others. Most owners do not like to spend the extra money on dog training collars and therefore choose to use one that will be more practical and meet the basic requirements.

If you have a dog with a lot of energy or is highly curious you can find it stressful to train them, as you learn to deal with all his behavior patterns.

If you find that after investing in your dogs training the results you get are not what you looking for, then you should look at ways to begin cutting down on additional costs. An option for cutting back on cost would be the type of dog training collar you use.

If the dog you are training likes to chew on things you may not want to invest in a nicer, more expensive collar at least until he begins learning to respond well to training. It is important to realize that the behavior of the dog and teaching them to respond to training is the main thing to focus on and not the collar, or any other accessories.

Even though dog collars are instrumental in getting better control and correcting unwanted dog behaviors, expensive collars can quickly effect your budget. This is the reason why many owners resort to buying cheap dog training collars as good alternatives, without having to sacrifice the function of the item, or adding an unnecessary financial burden.

When shopping for the right collar you should also check its durability and functionality before you even begin to look at the price. Don’t get caught up in the mind set that if you pay more for a collar, that it is a good indication to determine it’s functionality.

However, cost can be a good way to determine if your looking at the right collar but it should not be the sole influence on your final decision. You can find remarkable good dog training collars marked at an exceptionally good price. Another thing to be aware of is that just because the price is low, don’t think the quality of the collar is low too.

Remember, we were made to believe that price equals quality. You do not need to be in the mindset of thinking’s items at the lower end of pricing are of less quality, while those having expensive tags have the best quality. This can indeed be the truth for certain brand names but is not always the case. You should do some research to find the best bargains available.

If your collar is integrated with advanced technologies will obviously be more expensive. The popular electronic dog collar is a good example. The price of this collar runs anywhere from $100 to $999 depending on the types of features installed in the item. The more advanced technologies used within the dog training collar, will determine how expensive they are.

Since dog collars can cost hundreds of dollars many people find it impractical to spend that much money on it, because it is a training accessory. So if you are someone wanting to be practical while trying to get a cheap dog training collar, it is best to do your homework.

Dog Training Tips

Many dogs have an aggressive side, and you often see this when they are on leashes. Dogs that are normally well-behaved can lunge and snarl at other dogs and people as you walk down the street. While he needs exercise, you do not want to put others at risk. What can you do about leash aggression?

However, there are some ways to deal with leash aggression so you can both get some good quality time and exercise outdoors

Dogs are like children in many ways. Often you can avoid bad behavior if you redirect their attention. If you see something that usually causes your dog to become aggressive, immediately distract him. Tell him to sit or lie down to keep him busy until the dog or person passes.

Dogs often become very aggressive when they meet other dogs. If your dog does this, it is important that you not physically react when you see a dog on your route. Your dog can pick up on your body signals and will be much more apt to act up. Stay calm and keep the leash firmly in hand without pulling or tensing.

Some dogs may require a gentle leader harness or muzzle. These should only be used temporarily until your dog learns not to lunge. If you have a dog who is a danger, they can keep others safe. This is the first priority.

At this point, if the leash aggression isn’t being eliminated, you might consider a trainer. It can become very dangerous to other people and dogs in your neighborhood.

Leash aggression isn’t uncommon, but it is a potentially big problem. Start taking measures to cure your dog of this bad habit before bigger fixes are needed.

The stay command is one of the most useful for your dog. While indicative of a well-trained dog, the stay command can also keep your dog safe in different settings. To help facilitate teaching this command, use treats and praise liberally. SitStayFetch can help you gain even better control over your dog.

First, tell your dog to sit or lie. When he does, put your hand, palm towards the dog, and say, “Stay.” Use a firm voice.

As soon as your dog obeys, say, “Good.” Even if the dog only stays for a brief second, it is a great start. Praising can only help him learn more.

Also teach him the release command so he learns when it is time to get up. “Ok” or “Come” are often used. Again, praise and treats make training easier. Praise and treats help alot when it comes to puppy potty training.

As you work on the stay command, demand that your dog stay for longer periods of time. Don’t give him his treat until he performs to your satisfcation. Have him do a little more each time.

Optimal training should last about five to ten minutes at a time. Any more than that will strain your dog’s attention span and counteract your efforts.

Dogs do not respond to long training sessions. They get bored, lose focus, or fail to respond to commands. Remember also to be patient, especially at first. Remind your dog to stay often, until he gets it on his own. You may also have to reteach the basics a few times before it is learned. Knowing they are about to get a treat may make your dog antsy, but be patient and make him obey the command each time before he gets his treat.

Soon, your dog will be able to stay even if you leave the room. Even if you phase out the treats, remember to praise your dog for this accomplishment.

Do you Know How to Find a Good Priced Dog Training Collar?

Is it worth to invest in your dog’s training?

Some people are willing to invest a lot of money and time.

Of course you can purchase the more expensive dog collars if you want to.

One good example is the dog training collar.

For many owners it does not make much sense if the dog does not respond well to training to buy accessories, especially when the dog has begun nibbling on the corners of the dog collar. It is important to realize that the behavior of the dog and teaching them to respond to training is the main thing to focus on and not the collar, or any other accessories.

While dog collars are instrumental in gaining better control and correcting lesser unwanted dog behaviors, the expensive ones could still put a dent in the budget of the owner. To help stay within a manageable budget you don’t have to sacrifice quality because there are a lot of good functional collars that will work well without the high cost.

For example, an excellent collar could give the best value at its lowest possible price. Another thing to be aware of is that just because the price is low, don’t think the quality of the collar is low too.

Don’t give into the mind set that pricing equals quality. People may think that the more money they spend will automatically mean that they are getting a better quality training collar for their dog. This can indeed be the truth for certain brand names but is not always the case. So be sure to find the best bargains at their best prices.

If your collar is integrated with advanced technologies will obviously be more expensive. The popular electronic dog collar is a good candidate.

With a little research you can find the type of collar you want and in the price range your willing to spend.

dog behavior training

The truth is there are so many dog training schools that offer their services to anyone willing to pay them. The problem though is not all schools will meet your standards or your expected guarantees. Here are some points of considerations when trying to choose a good school for training your dog.

Reputable

Reputation has different meanings to different people- for some it is the capacity to yield good results regardless of the means, for others it is the popularity of the school itself which makes it highly recommended. Knowing the school by reputation is a good indicator as to the popularity of the school and the training methods used. It also is a good indication how many others have set their trust in them.

To find a school with excellent reputation you could ask around or search through websites. Veterinarians usually have several names of schools and trainers to give you, your dog breeder could also provide you with some references and ASPCA or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals can provide a list of registered names that are sure to use humane methods approved by the organization.

Methods of Training

Any self-respecting training school uses responsible dog agility training methods. The school must have equal concern to your dog as you do, treating your dog one of their own. Beware of schools that employ trainers who still use old training methods such as yelling or hurting the dogs for there exists many of this kind.

A good school should use humane techniques that promote positive training and limits the use of risky negative reinforcement techniques. The former covers praises and the use of dog treats in recognition of the desirable behavior while the negative reinforcement techniques include practices like alpha rolling, choking and yelling.

Sufficient knowledge

The latest training methods has to have a mix of traditional and the latest techniques for the dog. Having extensive orientation in this field would optimize the capacity of your dog to learn since it would be exposed to all possible trainings to which it could respond well.

When researching training schools, look for information on seminars with dog trainers for a good idea on what they offer. Remember that you would pay hefty amounts to get your dog trained, it is but proper that you and your dog receive proper compensation for your investment.

The school’s exposure to widespread training is another thing that you should keep in mind. There are schools that claim of specialization while others advertise that they have sufficient knowledge on all fields of dog training. Your choice should depend largely on the scope of knowledge the training school has.

Classroom Set Up

There are two types of classroom set-ups- group classes and private lessons. The main advantage of the group class is that it promotes socialization and good behavior in the presence of other dogs. When training alongside his dog, the handlers’ mistakes or techniques could benefit the owner.

At the same time, these private sessions could not yield these advantages. There is also a good chance that the transfer of learning and obedience to command given by persons other than the trainer is poor.

It is indeed difficult to select the right dog training school for your dog, so make certain to choose wisely.

They’re beautiful, stylish and sometimes questionable. They come mass produced and some with designer labels. They also make unbelievably high priced chew toys for a lot of puppies and dogs. They’re leather dog collars, once the standard dog gear and now a luxury feature. Is a leather dog collars right for your pet?

Advantages

A few of the benefits of utilizing leather dog collars are that they are long lasting provided you are willing to take care of them correctly. Even though they are more expensive initially than rayon or nylon collars, they can sometimes last longer than the life of your dog. Many owners of dogs who get good and muddy prefer to use leather dog collars and leashes than of other materials because it is so sturdy.

One of the other advatages is that leather always goes with your dog’s coat, whether it is brown leather or black leather. Leather has an undeniably timeless look and a great smell, if you take care of the leather right. There are now a big selection of leather dog collars in different patterns, colors, with rhinestones or other additions. There are even renowned designers of people fashions who are getting into doggie couture.

Drawbacks

The main disadvantage of leather dog collars is that it’s made out of very tasty animal hide. At least, your dog thinks it’s tasty. You can’t explain to your dog that it’s not good to chew on the $100 rolled leather dog collar but it is alright to chew on rawhide treats. They are made of nearly the same stuff. Dogs will chew on leather, although with patience and persistence, they can be trained not to.

Another disadvantage is having to clean and condition the leather dog collar and leash. You dont have these worries with nylon or rayon collars and leashes. You can throw them in the bath along with the dog. But prolonged exposure to soaking water will destroy leather. You need to get special soaps and conditioners for them. You might need to have the leather collars worn only on special occasions.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan, than you are already trying to cut out all animal-based products from your life. The thought of killing cows for dog collars might not sit well on your conscious. But there are good looking fake leather dog collars that are almost as tough as leather on the market. As an added bonus, they don’t have the strong smell that attracts dogs looking for a quick treat.
